Over the past decade
, the Crime Analysis Unit (CAU) has evolved into an integral part of the Fort Wayne Police Department.  The unit's personnel  scrutinize daily activity logs and police reports to glean information for their statistical analysis.

The Crime Analysis staff performs a number of daily tasks and publishes a variety of weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual reports.   CAU distributes statistical analysis to all areas of the department.  Each week, CAU publishes specific quadrant data and incident-mapping that enables division commanders to visualize the patterns of criminal activity within their area of responsibility.  These info-packets are distributed at the weekly Comstat meeting.  The goal of this publication is to give the commanders a better sense of how to effectively deploy their resources.   The Comstat meeting provides county-wide public safety personnel the opportunity to exchange timely criminal activity information.

C
AU is also responsible for tabulating and submitting local crime statistics for inclusion in the FBI's Universal Crime Report.  The FBI compiles statistics from cities across America and publishes them in their UCR-Report.  Crime occurrences are classified and tabulated using formats outlined by the FBI.  Criminal offenses are categorized into Part 1 and Part 2 offenses. Part-1 offenses include Homicides, Rapes, Robberies, Aggravated Assaults, Burglaries, Larcenies, Vehicle Thefts, and Arsons.  Part 2 offences include about every other type of criminal activity.  Participation in the UCR program is voluntary. National UCR statistics can be reviewed at the FBI's website. www.fbi.gov

Local UCR Part 1 crime stats will be periodically updated and can be viewed by clicking here or the Stats & Maps icon found on our Homepage.

The Crime Analysis Unit also prepares various reports for the mayor and our city council representatives.  This data affords our elected officials a clearer understanding of criminal activity within the city limits and specific council districts.
